We are meeting this coming Sunday, October 4th at 7:00 PM at Lancaster Brewing Company at 469 Eisenhower Blvd. For directions, go here.
Our reading this week comes from the Christian Century and Stephanie Paulsell, a professor at Harvard Divinity School. Please read Old-Fashioned Love Song.
The verses she refers to from the Song of Songs or Song of Solomon are:
Ah, you are beautiful, my love;
ah, you are beautiful;
your eyes are doves.
Ah, you are beautiful, my
beloved,
truly lovely.
Here are some questions for reflection:
- How have you experienced this Fall so far? How has your rhythm changed or not changed since Labor Day?
- What are some of your spiritual practices?
- What do you think of Stephanie Paulsell's idea to look at life through the lens of "ah, you are beautiful?"
- How might this change your relationship to your daily life? To others? To the world? To God?
On the surface this might seem to be a good application of the word. But one quickly sees that Stephanie has no idea who the Lord Jesus is. Thus she cannot give direction for the object of worship. By passing this on it seems you might also have no idea whom or what to worship. Romans 1 comes to mind. You worship the created rather than the creator!
Oh ye stiff necked generation! This is plainly idolatry. I can hear satan’s hiss, “did God really say?” throughout the article. Certainly I appreciate the creation we have before us. Yes we can see God’s almighty hand in the design and details of His creation, His world, His heavens and marvel. To supplant the creator with the created and not give the glory to Him is a lie right out of the pit of hell.
Now then to do this on a daily basis is to take that same sin of idolatry and practice it even institutionalize it. This notion is an appeal the flesh, and to the emotions. This drips with Jeroboam’s influence. Stephanie is bundling weeds, thistle and garbage! You are hardly shepherding this flock by passing it on as grass. 2 Tim 3:6 comes to mind.
